Three Ways to Use the Clock

  • Telling Time

Set the hands and read the time. Hide the digital display for a quick class question, or leave it on so children can check their own answer.

  • Quiz

Press Random Time and let the class read it out. The hands jump to a new time every round — perfect for 1-minute warm-ups, whiteboard games and station work.

  • Elapsed Time

Move the hands forward and watch the hours and minutes counter add up. Great for questions like “What time will it be in 1 hour and 25 minutes?”

How to Use the Analog Clock

  1. 01

Drag a hand to set the time

Pull the short blue hour hand or the long red minute hand around the face. The digital readout changes with every move. You can also drag the second hand with a mouse or finger. For keyboard control, press Tab to focus a hand, then use the arrow keys; hold Shift to move five steps.

  2. 02

Hide other hands to practise one

Use Hide Hour Hand, Hide Minute Hand or Hide Second Hand to leave only the hand you want to practise. Hidden hands still follow the same clock; they are not frozen.

  3. 03

Hide the digital time and quiz

Open Clock Settings and turn off Show Digital Time, then press Random Time for a new challenge. Turn Show Digital Time back on in settings to check the answer.

Live Clock uses your device’s local time. Dragging pauses it. Resume runs from your set time; Back to Now restores the current time. This tool does not provide alarm alerts. If you need an alarm, use our online alarm clock.

In the Classroom

  • Project it full screen

Press Full Screen and the clock fills the whiteboard, big enough for the back row to read.

  • Morning routine

Set the hands to the time your day starts and leave it up while children settle.

  • Quick-fire rounds

Random Time with Show Digital Time turned off in Clock Settings makes a two-minute telling-time game for the whole class.

  • Self-checking station work

Children drag the hands on their tablet and enable Show Digital Time in Clock Settings to check themselves.

  • Elapsed-time problems

Open Time Simulation and set a start time, then move the hands forward while the counters show how far you’ve gone.

How to Read an Analog Clock

  • The short hand shows the hour

It points to the hour we’re in. The long hand shows the minutes.

  • The minute hand counts in fives

Each number around the face is five minutes, so the 1 is 5 minutes, the 2 is 10, and the 6 is 30.

  • The hour hand moves between numbers

At half past three the hour hand sits halfway between the 3 and the 4. Drag the minute hand and watch the hour hand creep forward the same way a real clock does.

  • “Past” and “to”

Turn on the “Past / To” Labels switch to see 3:15 as “a quarter past three” and 3:45 as “a quarter to four”. These learning aids are in Clock Settings.

Analog Clock FAQ

Is this analog clock free?

Yes, completely free, with no signup and nothing to download.

Can I move the hands?

Yes. Drag the hour hand or the minute hand anywhere around the face and the digital time updates instantly. You can also drag the second hand or use the arrow keys on a selected hand.

Can I hide the digital time?

Yes. Open Clock Settings and turn off Show Digital Time for a quiz, then turn it on to reveal the answer.

Can I practise hours, minutes and seconds separately?

Yes. Hide the other two hands so only the hour, minute or second hand remains visible. Press its Show button to bring it back. Hiding changes visibility, not the clock’s time or linked movement.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, and it works with touch, so children can drag the hands with a finger.

Can I use it on a classroom projector?

Yes, press Full Screen for a large, ad-free face the whole class can see. Browsers without native full-screen support use a large view within the page. Press Escape or Exit Full Screen to return.

Does the hour hand move as the minutes pass?

Yes, just like a real clock. Set 3:30 and you’ll see the hour hand resting exactly halfway between the 3 and the 4.

What’s the difference between an analog clock and a digital clock?

An analog clock shows time with hands moving around a 12-hour face; a digital clock shows the time as numbers. This tool shows both at once so learners can connect the two.

Will my clock and settings survive a refresh?

When browser storage is available, this page saves your clock, display preferences and whether it was paused or running. A running clock catches up with the time since it was saved. The elapsed-time counter starts fresh.

Can I simulate time passing?

Open Time Simulation, enter a duration of up to 24 hours, and choose Forward or Backward. Start Simulation moves all three hands together at an accelerated speed. Stop keeps the current position; Jump to End sets the exact target. Reduced-motion settings skip the animation. Start closes this dialog so you can watch the hands. Reopen Time Simulation to stop or jump to the end.
